U.K. Work Permit
Obtaining a UK work permit from India involves several steps, including determining your eligibility, securing a job offer, and applying for the appropriate visa. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you through the process:
- Determine Eligibility
To apply for a UK work permit, you must meet certain eligibility criteria. The main types of work visas include the Skilled Worker visa, the Intra-company Transfer visa, and the Temporary Worker visa. Each visa has specific requirements.
- Secure a Job Offer and Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
You must have a job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid sponsorship license.
- Job Offer: Obtain a written job offer from a UK employer.
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): The employer must issue you a CoS, which is a reference number you will need for your visa application. This certificate confirms that your employer is sponsoring you and that the job meets the necessary requirements.
- Choose the Right Visa
Determine which visa category you fall under based on your job offer:
- Skilled Worker Visa: For those offered a job in the UK and meeting specific skill and salary requirements.
- Intra-company Transfer Visa: For employees of multinational companies transferring to the UK branch.
- Temporary Worker Visa: For short-term employment, such as charity work, religious work, or creative and sporting activities.
- Gather Required Documents
Prepare all necessary documents for your visa application. These typically include:
- Valid passport
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number
- Proof of your knowledge of English (e.g., IELTS test results)
- Evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself in the UK (if applicable)
- Tuberculosis test results (if applicable)
- Police clearance certificate (if applicable)
- Detailed travel history for the past 10 years
- Job details including title, salary, and occupation code
- Proof of your qualifications and work experience
- Complete the Application
You can apply online. Here’s how to do it:
- Create an Account: Set up an account on the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) website.
- Fill Out the Form: Complete the online application form corresponding to your visa type.
- Pay Fees: Pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which allows you to access the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).
- Biometrics and Supporting Documents
You will need to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) and submit supporting documents. This can be done at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India.
- Wait for Processing
Processing times vary depending on the type of visa. You can check the estimated processing times on the UKVI website.
- Decision
Once your application is processed, you will receive a decision. If approved, you will receive a vignette (sticker) in your passport, which allows you to enter the UK. You will also receive a decision letter.
- Travel to the UK
- Collect Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): Within 10 days of arriving in the UK, collect your BRP from the designated post office or your sponsor if they have arranged this.
- Present Documents: Upon arrival in the UK, present your vignette and other required documents to the border officer.
- After Arrival
- National Insurance Number (NIN): Apply for a National Insurance Number to work in the UK.
- Adhere to Visa Conditions: Follow the conditions specified in your visa, including the type of work, employer, and location.
Extensions and Permanent Residency
- Extensions: If you wish to extend your stay or change employers, apply for a new visa before your current one expires.
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR): Explore pathways to ILR if you wish to stay in the UK long-term.
